high after 20 children were murdered in newtown, connecticut. the president, congress and we the people all want to do something constructive to make sure this horror doesn't happen again. the problem, it will happen again no matter what we do. that doesn't mean we should do nothing. however, before acting, let's take a look at the facts. mass shootings in the usa are on the decline. according to criminologist from the minute money department of corrections, mass murder in america was most severe in 1929. in recent years, there were 32 mass killings in the 1980s, 42 in 9 '90s and 26s in the first decade of this century. according to the department of justice, murders of school age children have declined by 42% in the past 15 years. the latest stats show 1% of the murdered kids died at school. now, that's not to diminish the horrible crimes we have seen in connecticut and other places recently. all americans should understand that violence like that harms america's image throughout the world and we do have a gun culture here. no question about it. if the feds can tighten up gun laws with

on our faces, even today the horror of newtown remains unspeakable. and as congresswoman mccarthy said, we have been here before. over and over again calling for action after these terrible massacres. but as she also said, this time it's different. this time we had 20 little beautiful angels and their teachers taken from us. and finally, our nation seems to realize collectively that it's the time to have a deep national conversation. now is the time for comprehensive solution, one that talks about our violent culture, our mental health system, and that talks about really doing something about gun violence. when we return in january, we are all planning to work hard together on a solution, on all of us solutions, but right now we can do something this week before congress leaves. we can pass legislation that will be a first and a reasonable step to help protect our children and to help show that congress has the will to begin stopping these massacres. this week we can bring to the floor a bill that congresswoman mccarthy and i introduced some months ago, co-sponsored by so many of our f

since the heartbreaking tragedy in newtown, connecticut. three days since we gathered as a nation to pray for the victims, and today a few more of the 20 small children and six educators who were taken from us will be laid to rest. we may never know all the reasons why this tragedy happened. we do know that every day ameri violence. we know such violence has terrible consequences for our society. and if there's even one thing that we can do to prevent any of these events, we have a deep obligation, all of us, to try. over these past five days, the discussion has reemerged as to what we might do, not only to deter mass shootings in the future, but to reduce the epidemic of gun violence that plagues this country every single day. and it's encouraging that people of all different backgrounds and beliefs and political persuasions have been willing to challenge and mold assumptions and change long-standing positions. that conversation has to continue. but this time the words need to lead to action. we know this is a complexed issue that stirs deeply held passions and political divides,

public school teachers who lost six of their own in the newtown shooting, they are actually invested in the private equity firm that owns some of the world's biggest gun manufacturers. as we reported after the aurora shooting this past spring, cerberus kappel owns the freedom group, the world's largest firearm distributor. the freedom group produces over half of all semi-automatic rifles sold every year including the one that was used in the newtown massacre. the california teacher a pension fund has about $751 million invested in the company that is responsible for that, cerberus. late yesterday a spokesman for the fund told the sacramento beat that the pension fund was considering pulling its investment out of cerberus, saying "events that occurred in connecticut are a wakeup call to re-examine our investments." the california teacher's pension fund has a lot of money for those investments. $155 billion overall to be exact. remember $751 million of that is with cerberus. so facing that kind of clout cerberus ann

in newtown, everyone is on edge but everyone is following instructions. now with, the shift of activities going here, the president of the university  told those professors and students it's clear for them to go home. eastern portion is now clear. but lock down is now here on the western end of the campus. we've not been in direct contact with any police officers yet and we're not going give out those details but the police department is very actively working on this. we've seen areas -- ambulances qn no need at this point. so a situation here at the san jose city college campus of confusion as people wait to find out what is going on. i know i heard from stores there is confusion whether or not there has been first person reports from anyone inside of the buildings. they saw a gunman in the building. so, that is a verification process which police are trying to do now, and to find out how much of this is secondhand information and how much of it is validated. let's go back to you. >> thank you. very much. >> on the phone is the chancellor at san jose city college. are you there? can you
